Modern varieties of forage maize, bred for UK growing conditions, can produce 15 or more tonnes of dry matter per hectare, of high quality silage, providing that you choose the right varieties for your area and each individual field.
The first priority is to choose a variety that will reach maturity, in your area, in time for harvest, even in a poor year. It is usually best to play safe and put most of your acreage into varieties that will perform well, even in a difficult year. You can then decide whether your main requirement is for yield, feed value or reliability.
